Kundalini yoga changed my life.
It is an ancient yoga practice introduced by Yogi Bhajan, that focuses on breathing, posture, chanting, meditation, and singing. It is beautiful.
The first time I went was to Kundalini was at Yoga East in NYC with my two girlfriends. I had no idea what I was getting myself into but was intrigued.
The teacher sits in the front wears all white, natural linens to let the energy and aura be free and expand. And a turban to cover the head in order to focus on the third eye, contain the energy, and clarify ones thoughts.
The teacher gives a lesson about life and provide an intention for the class.
then you get into the warm-up, the kriya, deep relaxation, then final meditation, and tune out with "Long Time Sun."
My first time doing kundalini in the final mediation I felt my third eye open above me. I felt a light shine down on me and I was a baby again. I saw wings open and close above me. It was some kind of psychedelic experience. This I believe is having your kundalini awakened.
It was some time before I tried to do kundalini again. I had made a new friend and we were talking fitness, green juice, yoga, and then I had brought up kundalini and what do you know! He tells me he is a certified kundalini teacher.
Before I knew it my new friend and I were planning weekly class at my house in PA. He called them 12K, as each class was inspired by one of the 12 steps of recovery, open to all recovery as everyone has something they are recovering from.
Sugar, sex, drugs, alcohol, eating, not eating, rage, self-pity, judgment, BIG MACS was my favorite example that my friend used.
Each class had a different meditation, to become crystal clear, to BE YOU, get over a broken heart... They were amazing.
I had fear at first as the classes were two hours long, and when I thought it was over my friend teaching announces that the final meditation will be 31 minutes long... My goodness, that drop in my stomach, that feeling of, oh god, what did I get myself into... But then once I started the meditation I didn't want it to end.
Kundalini is the most potent yoga! It has the power to heal. I have shed tears in class, been reborn, and feel totally blissed out afterwards.
I am forever grateful to this yoga practice, and to my good friend who teaches.
Sat Nam.
